MORLESIN, Milena C.. Reflections on the identification and differentiation of porosity lesions from taphonomic effects in archaeological human skeletal remains. Rev. Mus. Antropol. Abstract Over an individual's life, bones undergo changes, which can leave marks on bone tissue and are of interest to bioarchaeological studies. These changes manifest themselves in a series of bone traits that constitute a potential line of evidence to inquire about past populations' lifestyles. However, when analyzing such alterations, it is necessary to consider a wide variety of taphonomic agents and processes that can mimic morphological features produced by pathological conditions and injuries of a non-pathological nature. These are the so-called pseudopathological alterations, and their origin can be due to both natural and anthropogenic factors, past and present. This paper will focus on a particular type of alteration, porosity, to establish specific criteria to recognize the nature of this lesion to contribute to its correct identification and to be able to carry out a differential diagnosis.
