The objective of this study is analyzing three didactic book covers of the discipline Moral Civic Education (MCE), established at military dictatorship in Brazil and which was part of the school curriculum from 1969 to 1993. It investigates how the contained images in these covers produce meanings of the ideals provided by the dictatorship. The methodology consisted of consultations to the law elaborated at the time that supported the deployment of the discipline. The analyzed covers were selected between many others found at the internet because these physical books are rare. At this selection we used as criterion: the imagery contentpresented in these covers and the education level (1st and 2nd degree, currently called, in Brazil, Basic Education) to which the books were destined. Consistent with the law and with the interests of economic and political groups that controlled the power, the present images in the analyzed book covers highlight those ideals: training of disciplined workers, perfect and sanitized schools, monuments in honor of the national heroes. So, the meaningsproduced by the images are related to the ideal of the construction of a school education used as an instrument of dissemination of the nationalism and the acceptance of the social order established by the military governments.
