LEANZA, H. A.; HUGO, C. A.; REPOL, D. e SALVARREDY ARANGUREN, M.. The Huncal Member (Lower Berriasian): a turbidite episode in the Vaca Muerte Formation, Neuquén basin, Argentina. Rev. Asoc. Geol. Argent. [online]. 2003, vol.58, n.2, pp.248-254. ISSN 0004-4822.
The Huncal Member, which is stratigraphically located in the upper part of Vaca Muerta Formation, in the depocentre of the Neuquén basin, Argentina, consists of turbidites, which were deposited in an offshore marine environment. It is characterised by a lithological pattern of highly rhythmic sand-shale couplets. From the base to the top of the member, diagnostic characters of turbidites deposits, such as coalescent channel accumulations, classical Bouma sequences, slumping and dewatering structures, and hummocky cross stratification can be recognized. It is inferred that the Huncal Member represents the proximal and medial facies of a turbidite lobe which may be classified as: B1, B2, C2, D2 and F2. Ammonites from strata above and below the Huncal Member indicate a Lower Berriasian age for the unit.
