LLAMBIAS, E.J. y LEANZA, H.A.. Lahar deposits of the Molles Formation in Chacay Melehue, Neuquén: evidence of Jurassic volcanism in the Neuquén basin. Rev. Asoc. Geol. Argent. [online]. 2005, vol.60, n.3, pp. 552-558. ISSN 1851-8249.
We describe lahar deposits from the Chacay Melehue area, in the north-western region of Neuquén province. These deposits, which have been previously interpreted as pillow lavas or as forming part of a normal turbiditic sequence, are stratigraphically located in the Los Molles Formation of the Cuyo Group. On the basis of ammonites found in the section, they are assigned to the proximity of the Toarcian - Aalenian boundary. Their origin appears to be related to a volcanic paroxysm occurring in the magmatic arc area located some tens of kilometers to the west.
