Abstract

DEL VALLE, R.A.; LIRIO, J.M.  and  NUNEZ, J.H.. Geology of the Pedersen Nunatak, Early Cretaceous, Antarctic Peninsula. Rev. Asoc. Geol. Argent. [online]. 2007, vol.62, n.4, pp.506-520. ISSN 0004-4822.

The Pedersen Formation (Late Hauterivian) beds forming part of the upper Mesozoic-lower Cenozoic Larsen Basin succession are affected by reverse faults and folds produced by transpressional forces acting normal to the Weddell Sea coast of the Antarctic Peninsula during mid-Cretaceous compression of the Larsen Basin. Eight sedimentary facies were identified in the 215 m-thick sedimentary succession exposed at Pedersen Nunatak, which is composed mainly of conglomeratic rocks with minor amounts of sandstones and mudstones, containing unidentifiable plant remains, and a marine fauna that includes belemnite phragmocones and ammonite fragments of the Favrella genus. This ammonite assigns a Late Hauterivian age to these deposits.

Keywords : Antarctic Peninsula; Larsen Basin; Hauterivian; Pedersen Formation; Transpressional tectonics.
