Abstract

ISLA, FedericoIgnacio  and  ESPINOSA, Marcela. Stratigraphy, tectonic and paleogeography of the Loberia coastline, southeastern Buenos Aires. Rev. Asoc. Geol. Argent. [online]. 2009, vol.64, n.4, pp.557-568. ISSN 0004-4822.

The Loberíacoastline is dominated by cliffs cut by the inlets of creeks and rivers. Thesecliffs are the best place to study the relationships between the Cenozoicstratigraphic units that compose the Pampean Plain. Within the inlets, thefluvial deposits are integrated with the remains of the Quaternary sea-levelvariations. The present erosion of the cliffs is constantly providing fossilsthat made this area one of the most important sections for the Quaternaryperiod in South America. Present contribution is an updateddescription considering the present knowledge about ages, a reinterpretation ofthe paleo-environments based on diatom assemblages, and the tectonicsignificance of these sequences in relation to other areas.

Keywords : Stratigraphicunits; Paleogeography; Lobería.
