SALFITY, JoséAntonio e SASTRE, José Eduardo. The endorheic Quaternary Cachipampa basin,Calchaquenia, Salta. Rev. Asoc. Geol. Argent. [online]. 2009, vol.65, n.3, pp.457-467. ISSN 0004-4822.
The Cachipampa basin, in theProvince of Salta, is a small, endorheic tectonic depression formed during theQuaternary and located eastwards of the valle Calchaquí. The northern, easternand western basin boundaries are tectonic blocks formed by PuncoviscanaFormation (Proterozoic-Eocambrian) and Salta Group (Cretaceous-Paleogene); thesouthern limit is Middle Eocene-Pliocene-Plesitocene? sediments of thePayogastilla Group. The regional framework where the Cachipampa basin islocated is the geological province of Calchaquenia, southwards of CordilleraOriental. West-verging reverse faults govern the tectonics, some of which wereactive normal faults during the deposition of the Salta Group. These reversefaults led to the inversion of the Salta Group basin from Middle Eocene toPliocene-Pleistocene? and, contemporarily, the thick sedimentary filling of thePayogastilla Group foreland basin took place and was completed. The compressivemovements of the Diaguita orogeny (Late Pliocene-Early Pleistocene) invertedthe Payogastilla Group basin and, as ultimately tectonic episode, originatedthe fluvial and lacustrine Quaternary basin of Cachipampa, whose structuralstyle may defined as either that of piggyback-like basin or that ofintermontane depression with postectonic sedimentary filling.
