FERNANDEZ, Diego S.. Mass wasting events in Tucumán province: Types, characteristics and distribution. Rev. Asoc. Geol. Argent. [online]. 2009, vol.65, n.4, pp.748-759. ISSN 0004-4822.

The province of Tucumán has an area of 22,524 km2, where almost 25% is covered by a mountainous relief. This fact, plus the presence of monsoon climate type with intense precipitations (> 100 mm/24 h) configure a favourable scenario for the development of mass movements over the main mountain slopes of the province. In this paper 279 mass movement events are described. The identification was carried out by the use of aerial photographs, multitemporal satellite images and field controls. The analysis of the control factors (precipitations, slope angle and orientation, lithology) was made under a SIG environment. The types of movements described are shallow landslides, debris flows, debris avalanches, rock falls and complex movements. The spatial distribution of these movements is controlled mainly by the rainfalls, as triggering mechanisms, and slope angle and weathering of rocks as causal factors.
