Abstract

In this paper the professional and scientific life of Dr. Flix Celso Reyes-Gainza, born in Tupiza, Bolivia in 1924, is summarized. Dr. Reyes-Gainza obtained a degree in Geology at the National University of La Plata and later PhD degrees at the Argentine universities of La Plata and Buenos Aires, and a post-graduate degree in Petroleum Engineering at the prestigious Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado, USA. From 1949 to 1969 he worked as a geologist and later became exploration manager of Yacimientos Petrolferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB). From 1969 to his death in 1972, he became a university professor in Salta, Argentina. Dr. Reyes-Gainza was a genuine teacher and many of his disciples acknowledge this fact. The scientific papers he published have become classics in the geological literature on the upper Paleozoic, Cretaceous and Tertiary of Bolivia and northern Argentina. Dr. Reyes-Gainza is remembered for his brilliant professional and scientific trajectory as well as for his high-quality human profile.
