Abstract

TONNI, Eduardo P.  and  ZAMPATTI, Laura H.. The "fossil man" of Miramar: Comments on the letters of Carlos Ameghino to Lorenzo Parodi. Rev. Asoc. Geol. Argent. [online]. 2011, vol.68, n.3, pp.436-444. ISSN 0004-4822.

We present and discuss some of the letters of Carlos Ameghino to Lorenzo Parodi, related to the "fossil man" of Miramar and its alleged "industry". These letters show the interest altogether uncritical of Carlos Ameghino to present evidence to corroborate the anthropologic hypothesis of his brother. It is noted that in the early twentieth century, Florentino Ameghino was considered as a paradigm of the wise, which meant to its supporters the uncompromising defense of his hypothesis. It is in this context that developed a "national science" framed on positivism, that in Argentina acquired own characteristics, and in the concept of country internationally significant. probably this situation led to the fact that the findings of the Parodis were accepted without much critical analysis. Until recently, Argentine researchers avoided the discussion on the subject.
