LESCANO, Leticia et al. Hallazgo de sepiolita en Serpentinitas, Mina árbol seco, provincia de Córdoba. Rev. Asoc. Geol. Argent. [online]. 2012, vol.69, n.4, pp.531-536. ISSN 0004-4822.
Sepiolite is used in over one hundred industrial and commercial products, commonly in sorption applications related to organic molecules. Being a fibrous mineral, this material was useful as a substitute for asbestos. Crystal structure consists of silica tetrahedral sheets inverted at regular intervals in the apical direction. Each ribbon alternates with channels along the fiber axis, containing H2O molecules and exchangeable cations, similar to zeolitic minerals. The sepiolite objet of this study is located to the west of the Árbol Seco mine, Department of Calamuchita, Province of Córdoba, Argentina. It was found in fractures and great deformation zones of serpentinitic rocks. In Argentina, the mineral was described by several authors as a carbonatic rock alteration. The purpose of this paper is to characterize the mineral developed in an environment of serpentinitic rocks alteration.
