Environmental baseline results from a water and stream sediments survey are presented. These studies belong to an early stage of the Sierra de Velasco uranium exploration project (La Rioja province). The quality of the waters has been determined from a strategic sampling design that allows to characterize the basin, and to evaluate any changes in successive surveys. Particular attention was paid to uranium and radium concentrations in water because of their importance in a uranium mineralized area. Finally, the chemical concentrations in sediments and the different contributions of the tributaries to the main water course, Alipán creek, are evaluated.
