Abstract

MORALES, J. Francisco. Studies on neotropical Apocynaceae XXVIII: the family Apocynaceae (Rauvolfioideae, Apocynoideae) from El Salvador, Central America. Darwiniana [online]. 2006, vol.44, n.2, pp.453-489. ISSN 0011-6793.

The family Apocynaceae s. str. (Apocynaceae s. l. subfamilies Apocynoideae and Rauvolfioideae) is reviewed for the Republic of El Salvador, Central America. Seventeen native genera (Allotoonia,Alstonia, Aspidosperma, Cascabela, Echites, Fernaldia, Forsteronia, Mandevilla, Mesechites, Pentalinon,Plumeria, Prestonia, Rauvolfia, Stemmadenia, Tabernaemontana, Thevetia, Vallesia) are accounted for, as well as five introduced genera (Allamanda, Beaumontia, Carissa, Catharanthus,Nerium). The most species-rich genera are Mandevilla and Prestonia, with four species each. A total of 34 species are reported. Family, genus, and species descriptions are provided, together with keys and representative specimen citations. Bibliographic references, common names, uses (when known), and photographs are also included.
