Abstract

ROESLER, Ignacio. Short-tailed Hawk (Buteo brachyurus) in the Argentine Chaco. Hornero [online]. 2003, vol.18, n.2, pp.123-126. ISSN 0073-3407.

The presence of the Short-tailed Hawk (Buteo brachyurus) in the Argentine Chaco is poorly known and is based on very few records. In this paper I present nine new records for Chaco, Formosa and Santiago del Estero provinces, the latter one representing the first provincial record. Short-tailed Hawk appears not to be so rare nor occasional in the Argentine Chaco as suggested in the current literature, but it would be a regular inhabitant of the Oriental and Occidental districts. I also suggest that the dark morph could be commoner in this area than in other areas like Misiones Province and southern Brazil.

Keywords : Argentina; Argentine Chaco; Buteo brachyurus; dark morph; Short-tailed Hawk; status.
