Abstract

LOPEZ-LANUS, Bernabé. Comparative analysis of vocalizations from different American taxa of the genus Bubo. Hornero [online]. 2015, vol.30, n.2, pp.69-88. ISSN 0073-3407.

Vocalizations of Bubo magellanicus and several subspecies of Bubo virginianus from South America and North and Central America were analysed. Four different vocalizations from South America were recognized, coincident with the distribution of forms magellanicus, nigrescens and nacurutu, and another, apparently with no nomination, from Piura, Peru, named Ñécu in this work. There were no substantial differences in the vocalizations of Bubo virginianus nacurutu and the other subspecies from North and Central America. The results of the acoustic analysis confirm that Bubo magellanicus is a different species from Bubo virginianus, suggest that form nigrescens from northern Andes must be considered a full species (instead of a subspecies of Bubo virginianus), and indicate that forms of Bubo virginianus from both hemispheres belong to the same species.

Keywords : Acoustic analysis; Bubo magellanicus; Bubo virginianus; Great Horned Owl; Lesser Horned Owl; Ñécu; Vocalization.
