Abstract

MEDRANO, Celeste. Ornito-sociocosmología qom o las aves en la vida de los tobas. Hornero [online]. 2017, vol.32, n.1, pp.165-178. ISSN 0073-3407.

In this paper we analyze the ethno-ornithology of the qom (tobas) of the Argentine Gran Chaco in order to illuminate certain aspects of the particular network of relations that unite them with birds. We carried out ethnographic field work in communities of Formosa Province, Argentina, combined with the in situ and ex situ identification of birds in museum collections and with bird guides. We organized the results considering the continuities that exist between humans and birds in order to discuss the way in which they intersect and define a universe in which the boundaries between humans and animals is diluted. Subsequently, we examined how these continuities modify indigenous practices, returning to a classic analysis on the “uses of birds”. Finally, we used the results of these observations to delineate what we called the quom’s ornito-sociocosmology. This concept, based on the indigenous notion of fauna, entails significant impacts on the potential projects for the use, management and conservation of birds.
