Abstract

ARAMBURU, Rosana M; ARIAS, Jorge A; CREGO, Agustina  and  BERKUNSKY, Igor. Occupation of lighting towers by Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus) in La Plata city, Argentina. Hornero [online]. 2018, vol.33, n.1, pp.59-62. ISSN 0073-3407.

We surveyed the artificial structures used as nest platform of the Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus) in the city of La Plata, recording the number of chambers and estimating the construction rate. We found nests in four types of lighting towers. Eighteen nests were found in 13 lighting towers (1.4 nests per tower with nests), with 1-5 chambers (mean: 1.6 chambers per nest). All the nests were active. The construction rate was 12 nests per year. The percentage of occupied towers was 22% and our projection indicates that all the towers would be occupied with nests in 2018. We advise to make structural modifications to avoid the advance in the use of these towers.
