Abstract

ROMANIELLO, Héctor O.. Incidencia de extravasación del líquido de perfusión por el uso de catéteres percutáneos. Arch. argent. pediatr. [online]. 2005, vol.103, n.1, pp.31-35. ISSN 0325-0075.

Introduction. The placement of percutaneous catheters (PC) as central vascular accesses has become one the most frequently performed procedures in neonatology. This fact has led to the recognition of a greater number of complications, which may increase the morbidity and/or mortality rates. Objectives. The main objective of our study was to assess the incidence of extravasation of perfusion liquid noticed as a complication in the use of PC. The secondary objectives were to identify the reasons for their removal and also their location. Population, materials and methods. A retrospective, observational, and descriptive study with the revision of record forms for 607 PC placed on 492 newborns (NB) at the neonatal intensive care unit of Penna Hospital, over a 37 months period. Results. The extravasation of hydration fluid in virtual spaces was observed in eight NB (1,31%). The most frequent cause of removal was the elective removal in 307 newborns (50%) and the most frequently used site was the upper limb in 398 newborns (65.56%). Conclusions. Extravasation of fluid in virtual spaces was observed in 1.32% of the PC placed, which represented 1 episode every 722 days/catheter. Elective removal represented 50% of removals. The most frequently used location was the upper limb. We emphasize the importance of clinical and radiological to asses the placement and monitoring of percutaneous catheters and their function.
