Abstract

ROSILLO, Irene et al. Perfil lipídico en niños y adolescentes de una población escolar. Arch. argent. pediatr. [online]. 2005, vol.103, n.4, pp.293-297. ISSN 0325-0075.

Introduction. The relationship between lipid metabolism disorders and cardiovascular risk, associated to other conditions as obesity, resulted in considering the importance of studying the lipid profile since early ages. The aim of the present work was to study the lipid profile in children and adolescents to provide data according to age and sex, and comparing them with those reported by other authors. Population, material and methods. A cross-sectional descriptive study of a sample (n= 960) of children and adolescents of different public schools of Rosario and surroundings, with a median or low socioeconomical status was analyzed. Males and females aged 5 to 8 years without known pathological conditions were included. Overweighted participants were excluded (6.6%). Results. The obtained values were: cholesterol: 164.9 ± 23.6 mg/dl; triglycerides: 72.3 ± 31.7 mg/dl; LDL cholesterol: 96.1 ± 23.6 mg/dl; HDL cholesterol: 55.1 ± 5.6mg/dl; non-HDL cholesterol: 110.1 ± 25.4 mg/dl; cholesterol/HDL cholesterol: 3.03 ± 0.59 mg/dl; LDL cholesterol/HDL cholesterol: 1.77± 0.59. Non statistically significant differences between the parameters comparing females and males in the studied sample were observed, in any age groups except for triglycerides (significantly higher in females aged 5 to 11 year p< 0.001). Conclusions. The comparison of our results with those of other authors allowed us to point out differences with a different level of significance. The benefit yielded by the lipid profile study in a population of children and adolescents might be a useful reference to identify modifiable risk factors as well as the necessity of interventions leading to the implementation of prevention measures at early ages.
