Resumen

MARCO DEL PONT, José et al. Efectividad de la vacuna contra la varicela: Estudio descriptivo de niños vacunados en un hospital universitario. Arch. argent. pediatr. [online]. 2005, vol.103, n.6, pp.497-502. ISSN 0325-0075.

Introduction. The development of varicella cases between properly immunized children is increasingly common in the daily practice, as well as the number of published reports about this. Objective. To evaluate the effectiveness of varicella vaccine in a pediatric population exposed to chickenpox. Population, material and methods. A retrospective, longitudinal, observational and analytic study was carried out. Results. 101 of 202 children who had been vaccinated -i.e. 50%- were exposed to chickenpox. Seventeen of them developed varicella; four were excluded from the study because the disease occurred < 21 days after vaccination. The vaccine was effective in preventing the disease in 82.5%, with an attack rate of 17.5%. The effectiveness was lower in those aged <13 months (72.5%) as compared to those > 13 months (87%) (p 0,06). Most of the cases (47.6%) had been vaccinated at 12 or < 24 months of age and most of the varicella cases occurred within 2 years after vaccination. Most of the patients (95.2%) had mild disease. Conclusion. The varicella vaccine effectiveness was of 82.5%, being lower in those vaccinated before 13 months of age.
