Abstract

RODRIGO, Adelaida et al. Creencias y prácticas de crianza en familias pobres del conurbano bonaerense. Arch. argent. pediatr. [online]. 2006, vol.104, n.3, pp.203-209. ISSN 0325-0075.

Introduction. During the first years of life rearing practices are fundamental not only for physical growth but also for the development of intelligence, personality and social behaviour. Objectives. To describe the main findings of baseline diagnosis of rearing practices in a group of beneficiaries of a social plan and to communicate the methodology used. Population, material and methods. Through a survey administered to 1,460 families living in poverty in eleven boroughs of Buenos Aires, knowledge and rearing practices of caregivers of 1,874 children aged 0-6 years were assessed. Descriptive and inductive statistical techniques were used. Results. Descriptive results of eight additive indexes constructed through the combination of indicators are presented. Slightly more than one kind of mothers reported adequate practices of reproductive control. Nursing-related practices were adequate in nearly a half of cases. Feeding and psycho-social-related practices concepts were inadequate in a high number of cases, as well as knowledge about child development stages. Mother's opinions about their children healthcare practices were usually adequate, though this was not reflected in their actual behaviors in all cases. Conclusion. The exploratory findings of this study suggest the need to include comprehensive actions aimed to satisfy the multiple requirements of children, besides exclusively considering their feeding requirements, in social programs for childhood.
