Abstract
TAGLIAFERRI, Paulina; VON SPECHT, Martha and GRENON, Sandra. Infección meníngea por Staphylococcus aureus resistente a la meticilina adquirido en la comunidad. Arch. argent. pediatr. [online]. 2006, vol.104, n.4, pp.354-357. ISSN 0325-0075.
Staphylococcus aureus is an infrequent cause of community-acquired meningitis. From 1990 to nowadays, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus au-reus (MRSA) has emerged as a pathogen in adults and children without traditional risk factors for acquiring MRSA, which is associated with skin and subcutaneous cellular tissue infections. It is worth to mention that, the isolates described in the past decade differ significantly from previus hospital and community acquired MRSA strains. We report the first two cases of community-acquired MRSA meningitis which were diagnosed at the Hospital de Pediatría in Posadas, Misiones, during the year 2004. We are drawing attention to the spread of this new strain and the need of strengthening epidemiologic surveillance in order to recognize its manifestations and provide the appropriate antibiotic treatments, specially in severe infections.
