Abstract

MASTROPIERRO, Ileana et al. Traqueobroncomegalia congénita. Arch. argent. pediatr. [online]. 2006, vol.104, n.5, pp.431-435. ISSN 0325-0075.

The tracheobronchomegaly or Mounier Khun syndrome is characterized by a marked increase in the size of the trachea and main bronchi. This impairs the normal clearance of the tracheobronchial secretions, creates a predisposition to develop recurrent pulmonary infections and the appearance of bronchiectasis and lung fibrosis. We present a case of a 17 year old patient with a history of recurrent pneumonias who was hospitalized with hemoptysis. His imaging studies showed tracheobronchomegaly and bilateral bronchiectasis, specially in the left lower lobe. An inferior left lobectomy was performed having previously studied the risk associated with the anesthesia as, the risk of air way collapse by the use of muscular relaxants. The importance of the diagnostic procedures, the spirometry findings, as well as the implicance of an early diagnosis to prevent complications and to improve the quality of life are analyzed.

Keywords : Airway size; Clearance of secretions; Bronchiectasis.
