ROJO, Marcelo et al. Reducción de la mortalidad infantil: una experiencia de monitoreo local y sistemático a nivel municipal. Olavarría, Provincia de Buenos Aires. Arch. argent. pediatr. [online]. 2006, vol.104, n.5, pp.448-453. ISSN 0325-0075.

Introduction. Monitoring of infant mortality rate (IMR) is a basic activity for public health services. It has been recognized that IMR implies not only knowledge to improve overall health conditions in mothers and children, but to increase the chances of reducing its causes. Objective. The general purposes of this work are: a) to show the IMR historical series of Olavarría, b) to compare these data with those from Buenos Aires province and the corresponding health area, c) to identify the causes of IM that might be reduced. Population, material and methods. Certified of death were used and the International Classification of Diseases (WHO, 10th Revision) was applied. Results. A general reduction of IMR was seen (40% from 1990 to 2000). The neonatal component was the prevailing component of IMR. The reduction of IMR was highest in the post-neonatal component. The local health system has experienced an increase in terms of the number of primary health centres and the complexity level of the Hospital. Thus, these facts may have partially influenced in the reduction of IMR in Olavarría. Local experience of monitoring IMR is a powerful tool to public health planning.
