Abstract

VECCHI, Carlos. Empathy, burnout and& professional competence: Some reflections. Arch. argent. pediatr. [online]. 2016, vol.114, n.5, pp.468-471. ISSN 0325-0075.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5546/aap.2016.468.

Empathy is an essential attribute to work as a physician. Biological, psychological and experiential factors come together to make such behavior possible. The erosion of this behavior is due to the presence of burnout, among several other reasons. Young people and those who are in their formation stage are the most exposed to this problem. Overwork and the lack of support from colleagues and institutions increase erosion. Senior physicians should have a closer collaborative relationship with those who are in their first years of training. Thus, they would actually bring their real professional competence into action.

Keywords : Empathy; Professional burnout; Professional competence.
