Abstract

LOPEZ PITA, Paulina. Nobleza y perdón regio: Noticias sobre el otorgado a Pedro Girón en el contexto del movimiento comunero. Cuad. hist. Esp. [online]. 2007, vol.81, pp.67-89. ISSN 0325-1195.

This study analyses the complex relationship between Pedro Girón, heir of the count of Urueña, and the monarchy, particularly King Carlos I. Their origin dates back to the year 1513, when the dukedom of Medina Sidonia became vacant after the duke's death without having a direct successor. Since then and up to 1520, Pedro Girón repeatedly tried to exert his right over the dukedom. He submitted continuous official requests to those ruling the Hispanic kingdoms with the aim of getting the dukedom back. Unable to achieve his goal by diplomatic means, Pedro Girón joined the 'comunero' movement, hoping to obtain by force what he believed was his fair right. However, he finally realized that in such way he would not succeed in his aim, and so decided to serve the monarch and get, hence, his pardon. Drawing from existing documentation on the mentioned requests and other correspondence maintained, this paper offers a thorough analysis of Pedro Girón's actions vis-à-vis the monarch.

Keywords : Pedro Girón; Carlos I; Comunidades; Royal pardon; Aristocracy.
