Abstract

LOPEZ TERRADA, María Luz. El control de las prácticas médicas en la Monarquía Hispánica durante los siglos XVI y XVII: el caso de la Valencia foral. Cuad. hist. Esp. [online]. 2007, vol.81, pp.91-112. ISSN 0325-1195.

As this article makes clear, it is impossible to fully understand the broad array of health care practices that existed in early modern Spain without taking into account the complex legal framework that governed the control of Medicine. This legal framework varied greatly among the kingdoms and territories that made up the Spanish monarchy. To illustrate this variability, the legal issues associated with the control of medical knowledge and practice are studied in depth in the case of the kingdom of Valencia.

Keywords : Medical practice; Medical pluralism; Protomedicato; Valencia surgeons; Apothecaries; Physicians; Medical examination and oversight.
