The centrepoint of this study are the ordinary masses for the dead, their several analysis perspectives and potentialities, as well as their contribution to the definition and delimitation of a certain change brought about in collective attitudes towards death in the transition from the Old to the New Régime due to their susceptibility to economic, geographic, chronological, social and cultural factors, as has been widely demonstrated and recognized. To fulfill that objective, this is undoubtedly one of the most significant and clarifying decision clauses in last will documents, in which spiritual yield, duration, nature, intentionality, places, petition, number, distribution, application, execution and evolution are placed under scrutiny. The indispensable sexual, socioprofessional, temporal and spatial contrasts complete the balance of the magnitudes and, above all, help to outline a crucial aspect for determining that mutation experienced in collective behaviour towards death at the end of Modernity, and in which the gradual but progressive absence of requests for services for soul redemption, or a reduction in the latter, is precisely seen to be a central element.
