Abstract

The present work allowed us to determine two protein profiles in 104 non concentrated cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from patients with different diseases by SDS-PAGE with silver stain. In pattern A (PA) bands of molecular weight (MW) ≥ 67 KDa were observed. In pattern B (PB) bands corresponding to proteins of low MW (20-25 KDa and 13 KDa) were also observed. The presence of oligoclonal bands (OB) has been analized by immunofixation with silver stain. An association between the presence of PB and multiple sclerosis (MS) (p < 0.0001) and the presence of OB and MS (p < 0.001) was established by statistical analysis. An association between OB and MS diagnosis was found (p < 0.05) in the group of patients with PB. Three patients without MS presented positive OB. The protein profile and the presence of OB have been useful as an additional diagnostic tool to define patients population with MS. The use of both determinations would support the contribution of the laboratory to MS diagnosis, evaluating two pathological events: the local synthesis of IgG (OB) and the axonal destruction with release of proteins from brain (PB).
