Resumen

BRIETZIG, E. G.; FALKENBERG, M. B.  y  FREITAS, S. F. T.. Evaluation of the in vitro interference from dry eggplant extract (Solanum Melongena L.) on laboratory tests. Acta bioquím. clín. latinoam. [online]. 2005, vol.39, n.4, pp.493-501. ISSN 0325-2957.

Eggplant capsules have been used by the population to reduce cholesterol. Studies with animals indicated significant reduction in total cholesterol or LDL cholesterol; however in humans the results are not conclusive. Due to the presence of anthocyanins with confirmed antioxidant activity in the eggplant, interference might be possible in the laboratory tests. In vitro interference has been analysed on glucose, cholesterol, triglycerids and uric acid determinations. The tests have been performed with commercial dry eggplant extract, added to the commercial calibrator serum in supratherapeutic concentrations and after that, in therapeutic concentrations for the analytes that presented significant interference in its supratherapeutic concentration. As a control, pure serum was used, and then starch, quercetin or solven were added. In the serum with non treated extract, significant interferences have been detected on glucose, triglycerids and AST determinations in supratherapeutic concentrations and in therapeutic concentrations on glucose. In another stage, were performed with the capsules content after a gastric digestion simulation, also in both concentrations. In the supratherapeutic concentration, interference in all analytes was detected, and in the therapeutic concentration, only on glucose. Some controls showed unexpected interferences. The results suggest an analytic interference potential for the eggplant commercial extract needing additional studies with other preparations for a definitive conclusion.
