Resumen

ACOSTA GARCIA, Edgar et al. Reference values of calcium, magnesium and copper in school children from Valencia, Venezuela. Acta bioquím. clín. latinoam. [online]. 2009, vol.43, n.4, pp.619-623. ISSN 0325-2957.

The aim of this work was to determine the reference values of serum levels of calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and copper (Cu) that were analyzed in 233 apparently healthy children from Valencia City, Venezuela randomly selected . Samples of whole blood were collected from fasting children. Ca, Mg and Cu were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Mean values for Ca (mg/dL), Mg (mg/dL) and Cu (µg/mL) for all the children were 9.5±0.5, 1.87±0.24 and 1.37±0.31, respectively. Serum concentrations in preschool children were Ca 9.3±0.5, Mg 1.89±0.29 and Cu 1.38±0.27; while for school children they were Ca 9.5±0.6, Mg 1.87±0.23 and Cu 1.29±0.32. Serum concentrations in teenagers were Ca 9.3±0.6, Mg 1.87±0.26 and Cu 1.21±0.28. Male children had mean values of Ca, Mg and Cu at 9.5±0.5, 1.88±0.21 and 1.36±0.31 while girl values were Ca 9.4±0.6, Mg 1.86±0.27 and Cu 1.38±0.31, respectively. There was no significant difference by gender. There was significant difference by age in the serum levels of Ca and Cu (p<0.05).

Palabras clave : Calcium; Magnesium; Copper; Preschool children; School children; Valencia; Venezuela.
