Abstract
ACOSTA GARCIA, Edgar. Vigency of Metabolic Syndrome. Acta bioquím. clín. latinoam. [online]. 2011, vol.45, n.3, pp.423-430. ISSN 0325-2957.
Obesity prevalence at any stage of individual growth and developments increasing worldwide. Genetic factors, poor food intake habits and lack of exercise are the main contributing factors. This situation, very frequently favours the appearance of non- transmissible chronic diseases. The metabolic syndrome (MS) derives from a combination of metabolic alterations that are very important for the genesis of diabetes mellitus type 2 and cardiovascular disease. Different criteria have been used to diagnose the problem in adults and more recently, in children and adolescents. Some studies have conflicting results on the clinical value or significance of this syndrome due to the facts that its definition is not clear, cut-off values for the various variables used are arbitrary, criteria are incomplete and its aetiologyis unknown. Its high prevalence, its association to a diminished life expectancy, to the increase on morbidity and mortality due to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and to diabetes risk are the basis for the interest in this pathology.
