Abstract

DJENDEREDJIAN, Julio  and  MARTIREN, Juan Luis. The Alcabala as a useful source for the study of prices in the Rio de la Plata: methodology and interpretation of their evolution in the colonial period (1782-1810). Folia [online]. 2016, n.26, pp.74-94. ISSN 0325-8238.

Through appraises from fiscal documents (guías de alcabalas) this article analyzes comparative price tendencies of consumer products in four cities of Vice-regal Rio de la Plata: Santa Fe, Corrientes, San Luis and Mendoza. We present unpublished wholesale price series of basic consumer goods. Three of them are common of all the cities: cotton cloth, yerba and sugar. The remaining is a basic food staple for each one (maize for Corrientes; wheat for Santa Fe; flour for San Luis; and rice for Mendoza). Besides, there is wine (for Corrientes, Santa Fe and San Luis). With this evidence, we aim to reflect, at least in a small extent, the price variations of most popular consumer goods in large cities, approximating as much as possible to value indicators of a consumer basket.

Keywords : Virreinato del Rio de la Plata; Colonial Markets; Prices; Consumer goods.
