Abstract

HOMET, Raquel. Las enseñanzas de Ana de Francia, Duquesa de Borbón. Temas Mediev. [online]. 2004, vol.12, pp.37-82. ISSN 0327-5094.

Shortly before the wedding in 1505 of Susan of Bourbon to Charles de Bourbon-Montpensier, the bride´s mother, Anne of France, gave her daughter a small book containing instructions for the young princess which would enable her to conduct herself with the dignity expected from a descendant of St. Louis. The article analizes the external questions pertaining to the book, such as the circumstances of its composition, its structure and the tacit or explicit sources which inspired it. Next the author sudies the contents of the book which revolve around two main fields, the religious and spiritual one and life at court with all its implicitly possible situations for a lady, while young and unmarried, as mistress of her court and as a widow. Ultimatelyan analysis is attempted with regards to the meaning assigned to folie and sagesse, two terms found repeatedly in the text. The analysis allows us to get in touch with an educational model which values the female function while at the same time devoting due space to the subtleties of court life as well as to the highest spiritual values.

Keywords : didactic literature; courtesy; nobility; lady; religiousness.
