The reappearance of nobiliary, military and christian cavalry was promoted by Alfonso XI in order to restore patterns of behaviour and ideals such as loyalty to the king, the defense of the other social orders, of justice, faith and kingdom. These values were considered to be basic within the prevailing context of political crisis in Castile after the king´s minority and in view of the war with Islam. To reestablish chivalry the king resorted to nobiliary archetypes from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, and placed himself as a mirror for the nobility to imitate.
