The history of medieval poverty was started in the nineteen sixties and it experienced a vigorous development during the seventies and eighties, but at present its field of research would appear to have exhausted itself, as is attested by the short number of articles devoted to it. This is not only due to a relatively exaggerated dimension assigned to it in its beginnings, but also its theoretical and conceptual frameworkneeds to be brought up to date. With this perspective the present article tries to carry out a critical analysis of the foundations of this historiography and at the same time establish its limitations and open some roads to enable its renewal.
