Abstract

RUBIOLO GALINDEZ, Marcos. Depictions of the Poor Tinted by Ideology  in Castilian Hagiographic Writing. Temas Mediev. [online]. 2005, vol.13, pp.185-193. ISSN 0327-5094.

The purpose of the article is to underline that mentions of poor people made in Castilian hagiographic writing during the eleventh to thirteenth centuries, are not valid depictions of these people's real material condition in general nor of specific individuals in particular. Even less do they serve to analyze poor people's actions. The article points out that the reason for this is that such hagiographic writing is tinted by an ideology in accordance with which in Castile certain ecclesiastical circles conceived and shaped the medieval society.

Keywords : Poor people; representations; ideology; hagiography; Castile.
