Around the year 1460 a reform movement started in the Castilian Dominican convents. It took on impetus during the reign of the Catholic Kings and stabilized around the middle of the sixteenth century. In the Saint Stephen's convent in Salamanca, which then was the leading authority for the preaching friars in Castile, the reform gave rise to a process of social advancement leading to a renewal of the friars' vocation in coincidence with the new requirements of Castilian society.
