The present article studies the support offered in spiritual matters during the first half of the fifteenth century  by the Papacy to Portugal during its expansion in northern Africa. Two spheres of action are analysed: the sanction of the crusade and the exemption from the prohibition to trade with the Moslems. With these measures Portugal pursued specific temporal ambitions.
