As was the case in all of western Europe, in thirteenth century Castile women's lives were not isolated and took place within specific social limits in institutions such as family and kinship. In these structures women played different roles assigned to them by society such as mother, wife or daughter and others as well. This article searches ideas on family and kinship in Alfonso el Sabio's written legal, historical and poetical work and hopes to establish the framework within which women were supposed to carry out their roles in society.
