Abstract

CASAMIQUELA GERHOLD, Victoria. La sociedad bizantina del siglo X en las versiones e y g1 del Poema de Digenis Akritas. Temas mediev. [online]. 2010, vol.18, pp.23-45. ISSN 0327-5094.

The article illustrates the possibility of obtaining through an analysis of tenth century literary sources a wider perspective of the Byzantine society -namely the society of eastern Anatolia, on the border of and in close contact with the Arab emirates which were during the said period the Byzantine empire`s main enemies-. The sources consulted in the study are two versions of the Digenis Akritas Poem which, although written down in later centuries, nevertheless describe important features of the social structures, the rules of interaction, the values practiced in the border area, as well as in contacts with the imperial central power and with the Moslem. The analysis stresses the importance of the Digenis Akrites poems as historical sources.

Keywords : Byzantine Empire; Digenis Akritas; Military aristocracy.
