This paper seeks to analyze the different conceptions of marriage as reflected in various works of ecclesiastical origin written between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries. In this regard, the work focuses around two axes: the first on the fact that the concept of marriage reflects its sacramental character, or alternatively, depicts it as a contract between the parties. The second emphasizes the etymological definition of marriage that was offered in the analyzed works. Such definitions emphasize the reproductive purpose of the institution.
