The aim of this paper is to provide a brief state of the art concerning the subject of the barbarians in Late Antiquity. For this purpose, we will start by describing the academic research produced during the last three decades by distinguishing three major recent trends on the matter. We will focus particularly on the manner in which the different authors address the issue of the construction of identity in those communities.
