The identification of priority areas for the conservation of biodiversity requires the use of methods that represent all the species efficiently. In this work, data of occurrence of mammals in Tucumán province were used to identify areas of importance for the conservation of this group using quantitative methods based on diverse approaches - richness, rarity, average value of conservation, complementary areas - and of the application of an index for the selection of species that could act as an umbrella for sympatric species. The overlaps of hotspots evidenced in the combination of approaches (e.g. richness, rarity, threats, or average value of conservation) was in general very low. However, when considering the approaches independently,the forest of Yungas was the bioma that concentrated the hotspots of richness, threatened species and rarity, determining its conservation priority. In terms of maximizing the richness of species while minimizing the number of areas needed for their protection, the selection of umbrella species or the selection of complementary cells can be the best methods to optimize the conservation of regional assemblage of species.
