Abstract

LOPEZ-STRAUSS, Heidy E  and  WALLACE, Robert B. Estimación de densidad de dos primates endémicos bolivianos, Callicebus olallae y Callicebus modestus. Mastozool. neotrop. [online]. 2015, vol.22, n.1, pp.23-34. ISSN 0327-9383.

Bolivia’s two endemic primate species, Callicebus modestus and Callicebus olallae, live in fragmented forests in the savannas of the Beni. We estimated the density of both species using an adapted fixed point count methodology based on auditory detection of distinctive primate vocalizations. Seven fixed points were established for each species and each point was evaluated for four days for eight hours per day. The average density estimate for C. olallae was 5.94 groups/km2 based on 47 detected groups. For C. modestus a density of 4.93 groups/km2 was estimated based on 39 detected groups. Our methodology estimated densities for both species in a rapid and efficient manner; therefore, we suggest it as a viable technique for future Callicebus density estimates and population monitoring in Beni, Bolivia.
