The methodology of route mapping using spools of thread has been used in different mammalian groups as an alternative to more expensive and complex techniques. However, few studies describe in detail the technical characteristics of these systems. We describe a modified thread spool system adapted for ecological studies in Tolypeutes matacus. The method allows obtaining behavioral data related to habitat use. The system has been tested in the Arid Chaco of Córdoba, Argentina, and its application is considered feasible in other groups of mammals as a complement to other methods.
