Abstract

SANCHEZ, Juliana P; TRAVAINI, Alejandro; RODRIGUEZ, Alejandro  and  LARESCHI, Marcela. Primer registro de pulgas (Insecta, Siphonaptera) en poblaciones de Lycalopex (Carnivora, Canidae) de la Patagonia argentina. Mastozool. neotrop. [online]. 2018, vol.25, n.1, pp.251-255. ISSN 0327-9383.

Fleas are recorded for the first time on Lycalopex griseus and Lycalopex culpaeus from Patagonia (Parque Nacional Bosques Petrificados de Jaramillo and Parque Nacional Monte León). The collected fleas (n = 151 Prevalence [P] = 80.80%, Mean abundance [MA] = 5.80, Mean intensity [MI] = 7.19) were identified as: Pulex irritans (n=144, P=80.80 %, MA =5.54, MI= 6.85) and Polygenis (Polygenis) platensis (n = 7, P = 19.20%, MA = 0.27, MI = 1.40). Pulex irritans is a recognized vector of several pathogens; its presence in L. culpaeus of Santa Cruz extends its geographic distribution towards the south, representing a potential health risk. This is the first record of P. (P.) platensis in Lycalopex. Since P. platensis parasites mainly rodents, this association would imply a predator-prey relationship, a common route of colonization in fleas.

Keywords : Lycalopex culpaeus; Lycalopex griseus; Pulicidae; Rhopalopsyllidae; Santa Cruz.
