Abstract

BARQUEZ, Rubén M  and  PARDINAS, Ulyses F. J. A pioneer of the collection of mammals in Patagonia: the trip of Emilio Budin in 1927-1928. Mastozool. neotrop. [online]. 2019, vol.26, n.1, pp.07-29. ISSN 0327-9383.

Emilio Budin, an outstanding collector of mammals, made, accompanied by his family and using a Ford T truck, a trip through the Patagonian territory during the years 1927-1928, to cover more than four thousand kilometers of routes. Part of the specimens collected was described by Oldfield Thomas in his last published paper in 1929. However, the locations of some sites sampled by Budin were unclear, due to the geographic uncertainty that surrounded the region in the first part of the 20th century. Thanks to the stories of the youngest son of Budin, a direct participant in the journey, as well as the comparison of various cartographic, museographic and literary sources, we have identified the main collecting points, from Bahía Blanca in Argentina to Punta Arenas in Chile. We discuss, in this context, taxonomical and biogeographical implications derived from the collected materials by Budin, and his epic journey is valued.
