Faced with the poetical devices that appear in the Homeric texts, it's fundamental to pay attention on how they could bring to the auditive reception, typical of the epic performance, a set of meaningful possibilities. In recreating mythic events the elements of the poetic language fulfil an essential instaurative function, because when converting the poetical devices in perceptive beliefs they render the presence of the narrated facts. Therefore devices like alliteration involve a thematic load that mark them as a key factor of the Homeric poetics. The sound effects in the Homeric texts have been commented since antiquity, especially the capacity of verbally reproducing the sounds of various types of natural phenomena, beings and objects. In the case of Iliad IX, such elements perform a remarkable function in the plot progression, through a traditional leitmotiv whose instauration they propel. This kind of analysis based on the recurrences of sound effects allows us to rescue for today's readings an important feature of the Homeric poetry: the ('verbal creation with onomatopoeic motivation').
