Abstract

This paper presents and discusses some notions currently used in the studies on Ancient Greek syntax. The first section explores the field assigned to syntax within the general framework of Ancient Greek linguistics and philology. The second and the third sections intend to discuss the concepts of utterance and syntagm as applied to the syntax of Ancient Greek. The forth section explores some distributional criteria for identifying the semantic function fulfilled by the complements of the sentence. Next, the concepts of semantic role, relational notion, semantic, syntactic and pragmatic function are briefly discussed. Section 7 summarizes the structure of the sentence and argues for the distinction of a number of layers on which its complements lie. After a brief conclusion with the main results, the paper closes with a list of books on Greek syntax published from 1991 up to 2003.
